As Stated in my previous post Pakawau is one of the loveliest places around the top of the South Island is Pakawau, a small location approximately 12km west of Collingwood, both 10km west is Puponga the last settlement in the west side of Golden Bay and the start of Farewell Spit. We are camped up at the Pakawau Motor Camp which is a lovely place to park at.
A short drive or bike ride to Puponga and dealing the Wharariki Road takes you to Cape Farewell viewing platform which is an amazing view on either good or bad weather days.

It rained for a couple of days however when it cleared we to the opportunity to hike up to the Pillar Point Lighthouse. From the Cape Farewell viewing platform it is a short sharp climb of 1.4 km to the lighthouse with some good views of the coastline.

The first part of the track to Pillar Point was across paddocks before entering a short track through the bush. Once clear of the bush it was a nice 400 meters up a pebbly and solid sandstone track to the top of Pillar Point where the automated lighthouse was.

The views from the highest point looking back to the south were fine however the track to view the spit was further along the track which was closed due to hazards caused by the big rain over the past few days. Jude and I decided to use our adult critical thinking abilities and walked about 250 meters further past the track closed tape for a picture of the Farewell Spit which turns out was hazard free and a picture was acquired.
