Cool Day For Bike Ride

Yesterday Jude and I went up to the base carpark where the track starts the climb up to the top of Mount Fyffe at Kaikoura to check out the conditions after the rainfall over the past day. We intend to tramp up to the Mt Fyffe Hut which is a 3 hour climb on Wednesday as there is a good break in the weather and hopefully a good view for some photos.

But today it’s just a bike ride around Kaikoura itself.

A cold easterly breeze meant dressing well and hopefully we would get a bit of sunshine later in the morning. Our objective was to ride the Whale Trail from the north end of Kaikoura where the NZMCA park was to the village center, pickup some Sammie’s from a cafe and have brunch over the hill at South Bay. Jude decides that the best place to get sandwich’s would be at the souvenir shop/cafe about 500m on the other side of the village but on arrival that had nothing like sandwich’s so it was back into the village to find a cafe that had some and we were successful

so off over the hill via Killarney St. and down SH1 to South Bay, along the water front and around to where the peninsula Walkway starts. Was a little breezy but not as bad as the northern side. Although a little more sheltered, it was still bloody cold so on went the beanies, that did the trick. The sun was trying to poke through some high cirrus cloud but wasn’t doing well enough to warm us up.

Lunch was good, a sausage roll, cheese sandwiches and as per usual our stove top coffee from the camp stove. And it was back over the hill to Point Kean. We found a nice sheltered area in the sun overlooking Engles Bay and took in the view and the warmth before the 10 km ride back to the Moho at the north end of Kaikoura township, to finish a lovely 26km ride. Even though it was slightly breezy and cool it was still an easy ride and a good day out. Early sleep tonight because we have a big climb to Mt Fyffe Hut tomorrow for our brunch. As normal we will share our trip up with a post.
