Woke to a beautiful day at Port Tarakohe this morning, the sun was just breaking above the embankments to the east and the port was as still as glass. Today was another stunner day and just what we needed to climb Gibbs Hill, a 5.3km uphill hike that reaches 450m above sea level. Starting at the Wainui carpark at the start of the Abel Tasman Trail you gradually climb up the winding track the track divide at 200m where one track descends down 3km to Whariwharangi Bay and turning off to the right the track continues on 2km climb to the high point called Gibbs Hill at 453m. Cool start to the day with an overnight low of 4°C fortunately the morning presented with a clear sky again which meant the day would warm up to a expected 16° as the day moved on as what has been the case since we arrived in the Tasman district. After a six day stay in Kaiapoi just north of Christchurch and everyday a wet day, we wanted to head to Blenhiem, however that six days of constant rain had washed out Highway 1 heading north to Kaikoura forcing us to take the Lewis Pass then turning north onto Highway 65 to Murchison where we stayed the night. With Highway 1 out of action Murchison was a busy little town and fortunately we had a travel day with good weather.
